2019 Kicks 105.5 Backwoods Nation Stage

Friday:

Friday 4:30pm - 5:30pm

Erick Northrop

His charismatic, grounded, voice filled with genuine sullen feeling is what turns his stage performance into an immersive and captivating experience for the people, about the people. Erick Northrop has one of the more distinctive voices in country music. It is recognizable, powerful and any fan of country music can instantly place it as his own. His writing style hearkens back to the days of country music's past, when it was written with true feelings, emotions and truly relate-able subject matter. His raw, energetic style of performing combined with his "Summer Not Bummer" style of writing makes even a stripped down solo acoustic show an uplifting and positive experience. His personal and relate-able lyrics are proof that country music is about values and standards as opposed to where you were raised. Allowing his feelings to pour freely from his words and occasionally pensive vocals enables him to strike a balance between hard rock and thoughtful, organic country music. Alternating between the outwardly guitar laden songs such as "Night And Day," "Hole In The Wall," and "Something More." to profound and thought provoking acoustic ballads like "You're With Him," and "Love Letters." His music can be described very simply, like life, with peaks and valleys.

The Mike Brandon Band was originally called Gravyhound and was first formed by Mike Brandon (vocals/guitar) Geoff 'King Cherub' Bosco (drums) and Ethan 'King Newt' Sawchyn in 2002. Newt left shortly after only to return in 2005 around the same time that Geoff left and was replaced by Fred Kaiser on drums. Geoff returned in 2007 to be replaced by Pete Johansson in 2009. Scotty Roland joined the band in 2010 and other than a brief departure (Gary Collins drums 2013-2014) he has been with the band ever since. Bass players over the years include Todd Johns, Will T, Ian Kovac, Walt, Dan Verner, Jon 'The Jew' Olcott, Keith Roland, Matt Campbell, Jess Levin, Alan Helms, and Frank LaVelle. Other past members included Eric 'Big Bird' Anderson on guitar, Crystal Hotzel on piano and Adam Martin on rhythm guitar. Gravyhound recorded it's only full length album of original songs called Menagerie in 2010 at Long Hill Recording in Shelton. It was released privately in 2012. Matt Campbell joined the band in 2011 on organ and switched to bass briefly before returning to his current position as pianist/organist. Weezer Schwartz is our newest member and our current bassist. The band name was changed from Gravyhound to Mike Brandon Band around 2016. Ryan 'The Panda' Newman-lead guitarist of the group Righteous Continental is a honorary member who often appears live with the band and has been featured on two studio recordings. Although Newt and Geoff are no longer current members, they are known to make occasional guest appearances in the studio and in concert. Mike Brandon is the chief songwriter. The band plays a blend of rock, blues, and soul inspired music and is currently working on a new album.

Ken Spin

Ken’s love of music began at a young age when he first sat down at his parents piano. As the years passed he learned saxophone in school and sang in a chorus with his father. At the age of 14 he joined his first band in which he played bass. Also at the age of 14 with his band he performed at the infamous toads place. Years later he picked up the guitar which he instantly found would be his favorite instrument. Soon after he joined a cover band as the lead guitarist and back up vocals. He stayed in this band for several years again playing venues such as toads place. Over time he developed his vocal skills where he went on to dj and perform at restaurants all over CT singing songs from Sinatra to today’s music. Ken now plays in several bands as well as a solo acoustic act. He looks forward to future gigs and where music will take him.

Alex Forest

Alex Forest is a Country Singer/Songwriter with southern roots stationed out of New England. His baritone melodies infused with nostalgic hometown lyrics provide a unique experience that listeners of all genres can appreciate. Influenced by 20th and 21st century artists, you can find elements of Sinatra to Cash to Sheeran within Alex's music, making him what most likely could be called a Country Crooner with a Bleeding Heart. Alex traverses through the North East creating stories that are evident within his song writing. Life lessons, lost loves, and other experiences are constantly shaping his sound. His latest project, his debut EP: L.O.V.E., is where he puts words to song about breakups, hometowns, and crappy cars. In September 2018, Alex was invited to be a Vineyard Vines Club Artist at Fenway Park in Boston, MA. This past February Alex was nominated as a musician for Best of Hartford Magazine 2019.
